What To Expect Getting Your First Tattoo

How to care for your new tattoo

Vicky Wisniewska
Getting your first tattoo can be a bit nerve-racking, but also exciting. The emotions you feel when picking your first tattoo are unexplainable. A million questions run through your brain; will I suit it? what if I get bored? Will it hurt? How big will it be? Will it fade? How long is it gonna take?

Your Tattoo makes you, YOU

Getting your first tattoo can be a bit nerve-racking, but also exciting. The emotions you feel when picking your first tattoo are unexplainable. A million questions run through your brain; will I suit it? what if I get bored? Will it hurt? How big will it be? Will it fade? How long is it gonna take?

The best part about getting your first tattoo is, that it’s personal to YOU! Whether it’s a tiny fine art wrist tattoo or a realistic back piece, you are in control of what gets to be permanent on your body.

I think tattoos are genially one of the best ways to express yourself. Your first tattoo can mean the beginning of something new, and or accepting change. From the moment when the needle comes in contact with your skin to your first jaw clench from the initial pain to the ear-to-ear grin when you realise you’re finally done.

You did this for you. Yes, of course, change is scary, and that little doodle heart or Arabic writing is on you forever. However,  in that leather armchair, where you sat for the first time, you made that decision of becoming you. There is no need to fear tattoos, or the regret after having them. You should be grateful for each and every one of your tattoos.

Most importantly, don’t forget to show your tattoo some love. Have a pamper night, spoil yourself, rejuvenate your skin, and put time into accepting it. Run your fingers across your new tattoo, moisturise every crevice, the fine lines and the shading, the colours, and the blending. You will be in love with how pigmented it looks when you take care of it properly.

You are so easily identifiable in a case of catastrophe. Even though we live in a society where a lot of people look like one another, from the same clothes to aesthetic changes, you’re going to stand out, you will be bold, with a dagger or a sword, engraved into your own, beautiful skin.

Negatives of Poor Aftercare:

Fading and Blurring: Without proper care, tattoos can fade quickly and lose their sharpness over time. This is especially true if the tattoo is exposed to sunlight without protection or if the skin isn’t moisturized adequately.

Infections and Complications: Neglecting aftercare can lead to infections, which are not only painful but can also damage the tattoo permanently. Scratching or picking at scabs, using dirty hands, or not keeping the tattoo clean can introduce bacteria.

Uneven Healing: Improper aftercare can result in uneven healing, leading to patchy or inconsistent coloration in the tattoo. This can affect the overall appearance and quality of the tattoo.

Positives of Proper Aftercare:

Longevity: Good aftercare practices promote the long-term vibrancy and sharpness of the tattoo. This includes keeping the skin moisturized, protecting it from sunlight, and avoiding abrasive substances.

Preventing Infections: Following aftercare instructions diligently reduces the risk of infections. Keeping the tattoo clean, using appropriate ointments, and avoiding activities that could irritate the healing skin are crucial.

Enhanced Appearance: Proper aftercare supports even healing, which contributes to a uniform and aesthetically pleasing tattoo. This ensures that the colors stay vibrant and the lines remain crisp.

Common Mistakes in Aftercare: Skipping Moisturizing: Many people underestimate the importance of keeping their tattooed skin moisturized. Dry skin can cause itching and scabbing, which may lead to damage to the tattoo.

Exposing to Sunlight: Direct sunlight can fade tattoos and cause the skin to dry out. Always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect the tattooed area when outdoors, especially during the healing process.

Picking or Scratching: Itching is common during healing, but scratching or picking at scabs can pull ink out of the skin and lead to infection. It’s crucial to resist the urge to touch or scratch the tattooed area.

Proper Aftercare Practices:

Follow Artist’s Instructions: Listen carefully to your tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions. They are experts and will provide specific guidance based on the size, location, and intricacy of your tattoo.

Keep It Clean: Gently wash your tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water several times a day during the initial healing period. Pat dry with a clean towel—do not rub.

Moisturize Regularly: Apply a thin layer of our Moonshadow Botanical Tattoo Balm to keep the tattooed skin hydrated. This prevents itching and helps the tattoo heal smoothly.

Protect from Sunlight: Once healed, apply sunscreen with a high SPF whenever the tattooed area will be exposed to sunlight. Sunscreen helps prevent fading and protects the skin from UV damage.

Avoid Swimming and Saunas: Refrain from swimming in pools, oceans, or using saunas until the tattoo is fully healed to prevent infection from bacteria in the water.
